Kids' stuff(ing)

BY LISA CHASE

Friday, November 17th, 2006

If you're stressed about hosting Thanksgiving and need some quick and easy tips for a great spread, then celebrity entertainment expert David Tutera can help. "Thanksgiving can be fun for kids and adults," he says. "It's all about family, so why not involve some little helpers along the way?"

Here the author of "The Party Planner" and "Big Birthdays" (both $20, amazon.com) reveals the tricks to get the kids involved and distinguish your decor.

Decorating tips

·                Use inexpensive, autumn-colored fabrics to cover your chairs, buffet and table. For a more rustic look, fray the edges.

·                Look for ornate goblets with earth-toned tints at flea markets and secondhand stores to give your table an extra sparkle.

·                Save money on floral arrangements! Purchase one centerpiece and accent the table with a mixture of tall, medium and small candles to add ambience.

·                Use hollowed-out pumpkins to serve as candleholders or vases for flowers.

·                Using fresh veggies to decorate your table? Lightly rub them with vegetable oil to bring out their shine.

Time-saving tips

·                Finalize your guest count a week before turkey day.

·                Stock up on wines three days before Thanksgiving. Zippy Australian reds like Shiraz or Cabernet-Shiraz blends are perfect with turkey.

·                Do your grocery shopping two days in advance (order online to save even more time!).

·                Bake your desserts a day beforehand and store in air-tight containers for maximum freshness

·                Make your cranberry sauce, stuffing and casseroles the day before. Allow to cool, cover with foil, place in refrigerator, and then on Thanksgiving Day, simply reheat.

·                Get your kids to help set the table the day before so you have a beautiful arrangement the moment guests arrive. (You know Aunt Millie will be early again.)

·                Stuff and baste the turkey Thanksgiving morning. Then go enjoy a leisurely meal with your loved ones.

Make these place cards!

What you'll need:

·                Wide popsicle sticks

·                Permanent marker

·                Scissors

·                Burlap material (can be purchased at Home Depot, Ace Hardware or in the Garment District)

·                Glue stick

·                Fall-colored ribbon

·                Double-stick tape

1. Cut wide popsicle sticks down to even sizes with scissors and have your kids write your guests' names on separate sticks in permanent marker.

2. Cut frayed burlap and ribbons to desired size.

3. Have your kids decorate each popsicle stick with ribbons using double-stick tape and then secure the name card onto the frayed burlap with glue stick.
